Edition 2010: Nick Helderman

Nick Helderman (1987) from Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, is a self-taught documentary photographer. He mainly focuses on documenting (independent) music culture. By hanging out with his subjects for a long period of time, Nick’s pictures reveal an honest and personal image of the musicians. His photo’s do not romanticize or confirm the clichés of rock ‘n roll. Instead, they show the life around the music, in a journalistic and suggestive way. A good example is Nick’s documentary about the collaboration of the Ethiopian sax player Getatchew Mekuria and The Ex, an improvisation collective from the Netherlands. Nick travelled with this group to countries like America, where he documented the response of the Ethiopian community and old fans of The Ex.

Currently, Nick works for OOR, Converse Benelux, De Revu, Het Parool and VPRO. His work was exhibited in places like the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam and the Dutch photo museum in Rotterdam.

He currently works and resides in Amsterdam.
