Edition 2010: Graham Smith

“I started shooting pictures of musicians ten years ago. I spent much of the past decade working for the media, supplying press images, covering gigs etc. This was enjoyable for a short time but quickly became frustrating as I found much of it to be soulless, restricting and lacking the more natural contact with musicians that I craved.

Eventually I became very bored with press work and I knew a change needed to be made. I stopped taking press style commissions and started working in the music industry as a tour manager and went back to the original reason I started shooting pictures – a love of music and a wish to document musicians and the life which surrounds them and myself. Many of the “big names” were removed from my portfolio if they did not fit into the intimate style I now wish to pursue. Photography is a joy again, no pressure, nobody telling me what to do. I am interested in the document, in shooting intimate and personal pictures. I shoot when I want to and how I want to. I only take pictures if I have unrestricted access and I like the artist. Their is trust on both sides. It has to be this way. My photographs can be seen regularly in exhibitions and book releases as well as on permanent display in many venues, bars and coffee shops around the world.”
