Edition 2010: Jens van der Velde

Visualising music; it’s a combination of the artist’s personality, the music and my own signature. I mostly photograph a show, which is the natural environment of the artists. Around the stage, they can really be who they are. I document everything in an analogue way, without using artificial light. The abundance or lack of light makes sure that bothersome elements are left out of the images. In doing so, I can emphasize the portrait. I use this method on all my assignments. I rather consider myself a visualizing reporter, more interested in unposed personality, than a portrait photographer in the sense of “My Idea-My Style, Your Face-My Photo”. This method causes a lot of chemistry, which is the base of some good friendships.

In 2009, Jens van der Velde won two Panl Awards with the backstage portraits he did for Tommy Hillfiger.
